Railways, focus on safety, not speed
Feb 17, 2015:
Friday’s train accident at Anekal near Bengaluru once
again showed that the Indian railway system is not as safe as it should
be. More importantly, the derailment of the Bengaluru-Ernakulam
Intercity Express killing nine passengers and injuring scores is yet
another wake-up call to the Railway Ministry to focus on safety rather

Bheem joins railway in Ahmedabad
AHMEDABAD:
Bheem, India's first diesel locomotive of 5,500 horsepower, will make
its maiden run between Vatva and Gandhidham in the state. The engine has
been designed by the Lucknow division and was manufactured at Diesel
Locomotive shed in Varanasi. The engine has a fully air-conditioned
cabin for the driver, and is equipped with a toilet.

It was on February 3, 1925, that the first electric
locomotive with a 1,500 volt capacity lugged coaches from Victoria
Terminus to Kurla on the Harbour line! But many people only remember
coal-fired and then diesel-guzzling engines when thinking of the Indian
Railways.
